Ernst A. Heiniger (1909–1993) began self-taught in 1929 to take photographs in the Style of Neues Sehen style. In the 1930s, with Heiri Steiner he ran an innovative studio for photography and graphic design in Zurich, designed posters and published in 1936 one of the first modern photography books in Switzerland, Puszta Pferde. In 1952, on the occasion of the world exhibition of photography in Lucerne, he met Walt Disney. This encouraged Hiniger, who had started to do documentary film in the 1940s, to jump across the Atlantic. Heiniger's films Ama Girls, about Japanese divers and the Grand Canyon, were both screened before Disney's animated films and received in 1959 Oscars for best short films.
